High-temperature engobes are compositions based on clay and other minerals and/or fritts, designed for firing at temperatures above 1150°C. Unlike their low-temperature counterparts, they form a durable sintered layer with low water absorption and maintain color stability even under intense heat.

Low-temperature engobes are compositions based on clay and other minerals and/or fritts, designed for application to ceramic tiles before firing, followed by heat treatment at temperatures of 800–1100°C, and for leveling tile deformations. Typically, the engobes fuse with the surface, creating a matte, silky finish.
